Decorative Protection For Concrete
Instructions for
template and grout tape applications
Application:
A.
Once the
slurry coat has been installed over the substrate you are ready to apply your
decorative coating.
B.
If you choose
to use a stencil or template you must be aware that some stencils have adhesive
on the back and some do not. If the
stencil has adhesive on the back, remove the protective paper from the back of
the stencil. Lay the stencil on the slurry coated surface and using a wallpaper
roller or equivalent, roll the stencil
pattern down onto the substrate to assure good grout lines with no color bleed.
C.
If you use a
stencil that does not have adhesive on the back you may want to spray a liquid
adhesive on the stencil to assure there is no bleed of color under the stencil
grout lines. Again roll the pattern down
with a wallpaper roller or equivalent.
D.
If you are
using grout tape for your pattern, you have more versatility as to what you
want and how it will fit on the deck, patio, etc. The grout tape come is 4 sizes: 1/4", 1/2", 3/4" and 1".
E.
For tile or
paver patterns done with grout tape,
start the pattern from the center of the walkway or deck and work your
way out to the edges. This way your
pattern will be even throughout the deck with an even pattern at both inside
and outside edges. Remember: You can change the side of your tile or paver pattern to
better fit the size of your deck. Random
stone patterns can be started anywhere.
NOTE: Do not make your
pattern too busy with very small stones or tiles. Larger patterns look better, even on small
decks.
F.
As with
stencils, once your pattern has been installed go over all the grout tape with a
wallpaper roll or equivalent to make sure it is well-adhered to the substrate.
G.
You are now
ready to apply your texture coat. This
will be your stone or paver pattern. You
can trowel the Excel Crete or spray it with a hopper gun. It is a good idea to make a sample on plywood
or cardboard so you can perfect the look you want.
NOTE: This is the time
when you want some trowel licks or
ridges in your cementitious material as it adds interest to your pattern.
H.
When the
material is dry but before you pull the grout tape or stencil, you can
highlight your pattern with additional tinted additive to give dimension and
interest to your pattern.
I.
You are now
ready to pull your tape or stencil. Do
this slowly. You will get some chipping
at the edges of your grout lines. This
is okay as it makes the stones look more natural.
J.
You can use a
grinding stone to smooth any rough edges on your pattern or to give your
pattern a little more variation in color.
K.
Thoroughly
sweep and/or blow off the deck before you apply the seal coat.
L.
When you are
satisfied with your pattern and the color, you are ready to seal your system.
This will be done with either the Excel Coat Acrylic glaze or Excel Coat
Acrylic Lacquer Sealer. Both sealers should be applied in two thin coats. Allow 2 to 4 hours drying time between
coats. Dry time may vary. Apply material
at approximately 100-125 square feet per gallon (in two thin coats).
M.
Allow
completed system to cure 24 hours before heavy foot traffic is permitted and an
additional 72 hours before heavy objects are placed on the surface.
N.
Variations of
texture can be achieved by different methods.

Storage and Handing:
Store all Excel-Coat
K/D Products in a cool area and keep from freezing. It may be necessary to stir
liquid Excel-Coat K/D products before using. Containers should be separated according to
batch numbers to ensure color uniformity. When changing from one batch to
another, blend one container of each batch to ensure a smooth transition. Partial containers can be resealed. Should a top skin develop on the remaining
contents of the container, the physical properties and effectiveness of the
contents will not be impaired. Clean mixing
and application tools with water.
Dispose of empty containers properly according to current Local, State
and Federal regulations.
Repairs and
Maintenance:
If damage or
excessive wear occurs, simple repairs using the same product can be accomplished.
