1. Concrete shall be cured a minimum of 28 days prior to installation of the Excel-Coat K/D System.
2. Curing shall be by means of water cure or dissipating compounds. Curing compounds shall be approved by an authorized representative of Excellent Coatings, Inc.
3. Concrete moisture content shall not exceed 10%. Moisture Vapor Transmission shall not exceed 5 lbs. per square ft. per 24 hours.
4. Check surface for excessive roughness, voids, protrusions or exposed aggregate. Poorly finished concrete will telegraph through the Excel-Coat K/D finish.
5. All tooled and control joints shall be caulked with a urethane sealant. Moving structural cracks shall be routed, primed and filled with an epoxy crack repair material. Do not apply K/D II finish products so that they span over expansion joints.
6. Concrete surfaces shall be clean and free from dirt, grease, paint or coating.
7. Concrete finish shall be power metal float followed by a light steel trowel and medium hair broom finish or equivalent.
Note: Do not apply over non-structural lightweight concrete without prior written approval.
1. Plywood surfaces shall meet criteria set forth for the Excel-Coat Fire System System. The metal lath, Excel-Crete, and membrane must be installed prior to applying the grout coat. No primer is needed if applying over the Excel-Coat membrane.
1. Primer shall cover the entire surface that is to be coated.
2. Use Excel-Coat Primer 120 or PC-155
3. Apply primer at a rate of 250 square feet per gallon.
4. When primer becomes tacky, start the slurry coat application process.
5. Primer coat is not necessary over Excel-Coat membrane. K/D II materials may be applied directly over Excel-Coat Pedestrian Traffic membrane over concrete or as a finish to the Fire System. Membrane surface shall be clean and dry.
MIXING:
1. Mix 1 ½ - 2 gallons Excel-Crete Tinted Additive with 1 50 lb. bag of Excel-Crete K/D to yield approximately 100-150 square ft. for a nominal 1/16 inch trowel coat. With a drill motor and mixing attachment, blend the two components until an even consistency is achieved (approximately 3-4 minutes).
2. To ensure color consistency throughout the project it is recommended that the Excel-Crete and Excel-Crete
Tinted Additive be measured in at 2:1 ratio by volume,
i.e., measure 2 gallons of Excel-Crete K/D to mix with 1 gallon of Excel-Crete Tinted Additive. Apply a thin coat to primed substrate. Allow to cure 6-8 hours.
Note: For warm weather applications use the Excel-Crete Retarder to slow down the curing process of the Excel-Crete K/D slurry coat. Refer to the “Product Data” section for the Excel-Crete Retarder Data Sheet.
APPLICATION:
1. Apply evenly with a trowel to achieve a smooth, uniform surface. Coverage should be approximately
200 square feet per 2 bags mixed with 3-4 gallons Excel-Crete Tinted Additive. Allow material to dry approximately 4-6 hours. Dry times may vary.
TAPING PATTERN:
1. With tape and paper, mask off walls, railings, sliding doors, etc.
2. Apply stencil or tape pattern using grout tape.
Leave additional tape 2-4 inches of tape exposed at ends so that it may easily found and you are able to pull from each end. Ensure stencil/tape is well adhered using a wallpaper or linoleum roller.
SEALING TAPE / STENCIL:
1. Use of Excel-Coat Release Agent with skin warrants the need to seal grout tape or stencils to avoid bleed-through and loosening of tape. Using a brush, apply Excel-Coat MERT Sealer over the taped areas and to 1-2 inches on both sides of tape. Allow sealer to dry approximately 2 hours.
MIXING EXCEL-CRETE K/D:
1. With a drill motor and a mixing attachment, mix 1 bag of Excel-Crete K/D (half bag at a time) with 1¼- 2 gallons of Excel-Crete Tinted Additive, 1 packet of Excel-Coat Fibers and 1 packet of Excel-Crete Retarder. Always measure and mix consistent batches to ensure uniformity of color throughout.
2. Continue mixing until both parts are thoroughly combined and a uniform consistency is achieved (approximately 3-4 minutes).
TROWELLED PATTERN COAT:
1. Starting with the perimeter of the deck, apply Excel-Crete K/D texture at a rate of 50 - 75 square feet per 1 bag batch. Apply sections at a time so that upon application the skin application may follow.
APPLICATION OF SKINS:
1. Once the Excel-Crete has been trowelled, lightly spray the trowelled surface of the deck with the Excel-Coat clear liquid Release Agent. After spraying a section of the surface, spray the textured side of the skin one time with the clear liquid Release Agent before using. Release Agent coverage is approximately 150-200 square feet per gallon when applied to both the surface of the Excel-Crete and the textured side of skin.
2. Immediately place the first skin over the treated Excel-Crete, square with the starting edge or corner. Use the handles on the skin to carefully set it in place.
3. Once the skin is in place, use a linoleum roller over the skin to leave the desired impression.
4. After achieving the desired impression, lift the skin straight up and off of the surface and move to the next area.
5. Continue spraying the clear liquid Release Agent ahead of the skin a section at a time and moving stamps until the entire surface is completed.
6. Allow material to dry approximately 6-8 hours. Dry times may vary.
7. Important Note: Never allow material to dry on the skins as cured particulate may adversely affect your pattern.
8. Allow to dry 6-8 hours, possibly longer depending upon temperatures and humidity.
9. Highlight or apply Antiquing Powder (See Options below) at this point or continue with sealer if none is required.
10. Carefully pull tape from the joints. Hone any rough edges with honing stone and brush clean.
ANTIQUING OPTION:
To incorporate an antique finish, mix 2-4 ounces of selected Antiquing Powder per 1 gallon of the clear Release Agent. Using a pump sprayer, apply the tinted Release Agent over dry textured area and allow antiquing liquid to penetrate and dry before applying other colors. Coverage is approximately 200 square ft. per gallon. To add depth to the appearance, allow antiquing liquid to puddle in the low areas of the texture. It is important to achieve a uniform antique look over the entire surface since how it looks wet will be how it looks once sealed. To lighten and modify the antiquing or remove it completely, use Simple Green or a similar water-based detergent and a stiff brush to clean. Allow individual applications to dry before applying a new color, a second color and the final seal coats.
HIGHLIGHTING OPTION:
Excel-Crete Tinted Additive may be applied with a rag or brush for highlighting. Allow application(s) to dry 8 hours before applying a new color or starting a second application of the same color.
After the system has been sealed with one coat of Acrylic Lacquer Sealer, you may grout the pattern. Mix Excel-Crete K/D (White) with the Antiquing Powder of your choice and clean water to form a paste. Apply paste to grout line using a flexible squeegee. Wash away excess using a tile sponge. Continue to sponge clean with fresh water until the stone pattern is clean and free of residue. Allow to dry. Roll second coat of Excel-Coat Acrylic Lacquer Sealer over grouted system.
PREPARATION:
1. Use a blower to clean the deck surface of any dirt dust or debris.
APPLICATION:
1. With a 4" brush, apply Excel-Coat Glaze or Excel-Coat Acrylic Lacquer Sealer around the perimeter of the deck and drains. The material should cover all flashing at the walls, doorjambs and fascia edges.
2. Apply two thin coats of Excel-Coat Glaze or Excel-Coat Acrylic Lacquer sealer by roller or airless sprayer at a rate of 250 square ft. per gallon per coat, for a net yield of 125 square ft. per gallon total coverage.
3. Allow 4 hours to dry before applying the second coat.
4. Allow completed system to cure 24 hours before heavy foot traffic is permitted and an additional 72 hours before heavy objects are placed on the surface.
Note: Cold or inclement weather will effect the cure time of all Excel-Coat K/D II System products. Do not install over wet substrate, in the rain or if the threat of rain exists within 24 hours.
Note: To insure uniformity of color, drill-mix Excel-Crete Tinted Additive before use.
